Biological and Geological Field Studies in Hawaii

Spring & Summer 2011

(This is a text version of information found in our flier. Please see other areas of the website for more detailed information. Please also feel free to download the actual tri-fold flier that we distribute at the bottom of this page)

The Hawaiian Islands are a unique outdoor laboratory for Environmental Biology, Botany and Geology. Due to its isolation, Hawaii has a flora and fauna unique in the world. Over ninety percent of Hawaii's native plants and animals are found nowhere else in the world. Hawaii offers active volcanoes, many examples of adaptive radiation and incredible examples of habitat diversity. While in Hawaii we will explore the islands of Oahu, Hawaii and Kauai.

The Hawaiian Field Studies Program includes a study of the terrestrial ecology, marine ecology, geology and oceanography. The program includes Environmental Biology 2406, Botany 1411, Earth Science 1401 and Physical Fitness 1123. These courses offer a total of thirteen credit hours. Prior to our trip to Hawaii, twelve pre-trip classes will be held over a ten-week period. Classes start in late March 2011 (ON THE WEEKENDS) and end in June 2011. For an exact schedule of classes please see our website or call. Sessions include classroom and lab instruction in botany, earth sciences, and a field trip to the Arbuckle Mountains. The group will depart for a two week field studies in Hawaii mid June, returning to DFW two weeks later. The class is open to the first 48 students who pay a $500.00 deposit and register. The deposit is refundable until the first day of class.

The cost of the program is approximately $TBD including air-fare, tuition, inter-island travel, guest speakers, tours, rentals and lodging. The only expenses not covered by the above fees are text, and food. The breakdown below estimates the costs. The student fee could vary as final arrangements are completed.
